York Minster Cathedral Hotel & Visitor Information

Originally constructed as a wooded church in 627, York Minster was re-built in stone and lasted until it was destroyed by fire in 741. Invading Normans took control of York, replacing the ruined church with a finer stone version, which was improved in 1080 by Archbishop Thomas of Bayeux. The church was enlarged again in 1215, transforming the building into the impressive structure we know today. Improvements included the tower, chapterhouse, undercroft, crypt, and the stunning East Window, which is the largest single expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. www.yorkminster.org
